We chose to leave our clay white and painted our sculptures with acrylic paint to give them colour. Go ahead and preheat your oven to the lowest setting. It usually takes about 2 days for it to fully dry out. However, you may need to wait longer if you live in an area that's high in humidity. Some of the clay will be quite runny, so be careful as you pour.

How to make clay at home with flour

Another recent instructable was making potash from wood ash, which can be used as a clay glaze. Thats what is done in the southwest of the united states and into mexico, its just more obvious there because all the topsoil is blown away. Clear off a clean working space and put on some latex or nitrile gloves to keep your hands clean. The red clay may stain your hands and work surface. Both clays can get smeared into clothing or into furniture if you are careless. Have a small cup of clean tap water available to think the clay down if you need to. It isn’t very difficult to make the root tabs and it is relatively cheap. Twenty five pounds of clay isn’t all that much and the dry fertilizers are fairly inexpensive too.

For this clay tablet I choose to use Old Persian as it is mainly phonographic and because I had found some inscriptions which I could copy and slightly edit. It does however have a few logograms for important commonly used words such as King and God. This is useful as the word for king is rather long so it is much easier just to use the logogram. Once formed you will want to leave the tablet to dry a bit so it is easier to work with the stylus.
